”Se pitkä seinä tuntu melkein kaatuvan päälle ja se matala soundi niistä autoista sulki katsojan sinne auton sisään istumaan siihen kummalliseen välitilaan, missä ei olla oikeastaan missään, moottoritie on varmaan kaikista epäpaikoista "olemattomin" ja toisistaan poikkeamattomin.

Autoa ajaessa pääsee myös ajatuksistaan jonkinlaiseen samantyyppiseen meditatiiviseen tilaan, missä ei oikeastaan enää ajattele mitään, ja missä kehollakin on ihmeellinen olemisen tilansa, että se on tavallaan passiivinen mutta kuitenkin aktiivinen ja käytössä, ilman sitä se auto ei liiku. Pimeys on aihe, johon Tanja Koponen palaa yhä uudelleen. Hänen teoksensa rakentuvat minimalismissaan hyvin tehokkaiksi. Niihin samaistuminen on voimakasta, sillä teokset saavuttavat pelkistyksessään yleispätevyyden asteen.

Tanja Koponen (s.1968) on opiskellut Lahden muotoiluinstituutissa, Kuvataideakatemiassa, Edinburgh College of Artissa ja University College Londonissa. Viimeksi taiteilijan teoksia on nähty mm. Muu ryn Juhlanäyttelyssä Taidehallissa, Brooklyn Fire Proof - galleriassa New Yorkissa sekä Taidehallin Studiossa.

Mai Braun’s work draws on everyday materials – house paint, carboard and lumber – to make objects characterized by a sense of the hand-built and homemade. Largely improvised, Braun makes her sculptures with a playful irreverence; geometric constructions are built of found cardboard and craft materials. Her work attempts to locate a balance between humor and gravity, precision and irregularity, order and entropy.

‘Prototyyppi 2’, shown at Kluuvin galleria, is constructed from painted and bent lengths of wooden dowels that are connected via aluminum tubing and arranged into a thicket of voluminous shapes. The piece does not have an absolute form with the hoops supporting each other in a state of temporary equilibrium.

‘Prototyyppi 1’ is assembled from found cardboard boxes that are piled up in an apparently random manner but with the concise and faceted additions connecting the boxes suggesting an underlying order.

German-Finnish artist Mai Braun was born in Berlin in 1970. She attended the Oriveden Opisto and studied at Edinburgh College of Art and the Royal College of Art in London. In 1997 she received a studio residency at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston has lived in the US since, for the last six years in New York while working in the International Program of The Museum of Modern Art. She has exhibited mainly in the US but also in Finland. She was artist-in-residence at the Chinati Foundation in Marfa, TX in 2005, and has been the recipient of several fellowships, including from the Bronx Museum of Arts.
