The Three Sisters exhibition is the result of the friendship and collaboration between three powerful artists and personalities. Lena Cronqvist from Sweden, Outi Heiskanen from Finland and Irina Zatulovskaya from Russia have all been developing their highly personal visual worlds for decades.
The style and themes of all three artists are different. What they have in common, however, is the untamed power and lack of inhibition in their work and the co-existence of humour with silence and meditation. They are all searching for a link to the child's world, looking beyond the turmoil of current affairs.
Lena Cronqvist (b. 1938) paints herself both as an ageing woman and a little girl who is conducting questionable experiments on her shrunken parents. The psychological portraits reveal the power, vulnerability and love-hate relationships in the family. The works are like a balancing act between humour and horror.
Outi Heiskanen (b. 1937) combines graphic art and old objects into evocative installations. The magical world of her works is populated by fragile, yet powerful, creatures, the Bush Wind Folk. The viewer's own imagination is stimulated by the fabric of myths.
Irina Zatulovskaya (b. 1954) paints with a sweeping brush, but her composition and palette are meticulously planned. The worn materials of her found painting supports tell their own stories along with the simple themes. The paintings have a devout aspect reminiscent of icons, inviting the viewer to meditate.
The exhibition is produced jointly by the Tampere Museum of Contemporary Art, the Himmelblau Printmaking Studio and the Helsinki City Art Museum.
