In addition to art studies, sculptor Gunnar Finne studied architecture at the Polytechnical school and industrial arts at, for instance, Vienna's Kunstgewerbe. He was also a member of Ornamo, the Finnish Association of Designers. Thanks to this background, Finne's approach was extremely comprehensive and he was very skilled in adapting his works to their surroundings. This made him popular with architects who often worked with him. The stylized realism and subtle humour, seen in the play with various natural elements (the fish spout water) of `The Fish', soften the dark and somewhat rigid appearance of the Bensow building in front of which the piece is placed. The fountain was erected in 1949 and it is cast in bronze.
