In 1927, the Fine Arts Academy of Finland commissioned a memorial statue of the painter Albert Edelfelt (1854- 1905) from Ville Vallgren. The realistic bronze piece was originally located in the Ateneum park but moved to Eira in 1976 and again to Ateneum park 2004.

The work depicts Edelfelt at work; he is wearing his artist´s coat and holds a palette in his hand. In his time, Albert Edelfelt was the most admired painter in Finland. His began with historical paintings in the 1870s and progressed to realistic portraits and folk themes as well as depictions of themes from Finnish literature and scenery. Edelfelt, who spoke several languages, had excellent contacts abroad, in France, for instance, where his role in making Finnish culture known was very significant.

The sculpture was under conservation 2003-2004 and was be erected in its original place in the Ateneum park in summer 2004.

Due to construction work on the area, the statue has been temporarily stored and will be returned to it's place in 2015.
