Markku and Pirkko Viitasalo and Matti Koskela won the sculpture competition for the Pasila government office block in 1978 and their `Construction 2000, Ornament' was finished four years later. The cube-like stainless steel sculpture was inspired by traditional straw ornaments. Its dimensions, however, are of a completely different scale: the work is four metres high and weighs 600 kg. True to Constructivist ideals, the work's form and structure in themselves give it meaning and significance. A central role is played by light and the optical changes reflected in the structure as the `Ornament' moves.
