The piece comprises two figures, one of which is leaning slightly backward. Together, the figures represent a body preparing to throw something, the shifting of weight before the arm swings in an arch, moving from behind, first up and then forward. Both figures’ left arm is extended forward to balance the movement and to assist aiming. The shoulders and arms form a long horizontal line. The spread legs and the geometric and massive shape of the body balance the composition and sustain tension in the movement at the moment of throwing.

The simplified and allusive expression, sculptural imagination and playful humour are characteristic of Mikko Hovi’s work, and clearly present in Boys Throwing a Ball. The bronze piece was completed in 1955.
