Although Carl Wilhelms was born in St.Petersburg, Russia, he studied art at the Central School of the Applied Arts in Finland and, in Paris, under Antoine Bourde. After his studies he settled in Finland. Peter's Draught of Fish is a tile relief. Wilhelms typically used the outlines of figures to express movement. Although his early work was greatly influenced by Buddhist sculpture, he later became more interested in Western art, as is seen in the elimination of detail. The subject of the work is from the New Testament, chapter 5, verse 1, of Luke where Jesus calls upon Peter and the other disciples. In the passage Jesus is teaching from the boat of a fisherman named Peter. After finishing he tells Peter to row the boat to deep water and cast his nets. Peter replies that he has been fishing all night with no catch. Yet he does what Jesus asks of him and receives a miraculous draught of fish.
