While sculptors commonly made ceramic pieces during the early part of this century, Schilkin actually specialized in ceramics. His works shunned traditional values and emphasized colour, passing situations and humour. In 1935 he was employed by Arabia where he made, for example, a series of spirited animal sculptures. He is also known for his reliefs which include monumental works such as that on the facade of the Helsinki School of Economics and Business Administration and the Porcelain Painters depicting ancient painters decorating amphoras while an aristocratic lady watches their work.
