The work was donated by the estate of the Councillor of State J.J. Pippingsköld to the city of Helsinki. It was originally purchased at the Paris World Fair in 1889. The bronze piece is a representative of 19th century realistical style. It seems that the artist's only intention was to show how even such an ordinary animal is elevated when it is portrayed in bronze.
