The debate on the duties of art which took place in Finland in the 1970s resulted in several works which had a completely new relationship with their surroundings. In `The Lollipop Forest'; the boundary between art and life has been erased completely, the work of art becoming a integral part of the sphere of people's lives. Although `The Lollipop Forest' is a piece of sculpture, it is also used by children in their games. The work does, however, have obvious links with more traditional art: Pop, Dada as well as Surrealism have all contributed to Manninen's piece. The work was erected in 1980 and it is constructed from wood and reinforced plastic.
