"False Cube" was erected in honor of the 100-yr anniversary of the Helsingin Suomalaisen Yhteiskoulun (HSYK).
The artist, Anssi Asunta, was working as an art teacher at the school at the time of the commission.
Optical illusions and kinetic art, also seen in "False Cube", are characteristic of the artist's work. The sculpture is made from mixed materials and it's horizontal sides are coloured so that, depending on the angle it is viewed from, it appears that the cube is either intact or that there is another cube, smaller and black, inside it. Look again, compare the cube to its shadow; what do you see?
Four illusionistic cubes, also by Anssi Asunta, can be found in Vantaa at the main entrance of Heureka, The Finnish Science Center.
