A well-known patriot, Lauri Leppänen, a sculptor, donated to the Katajanokan Kasino officers' club his sculpture titled Hill 13, which had been his entry in a monument competition organised by the Reserve Officer School in Hamina.
Katajanokan Kasino has, throughout its history, been involved in military life in one way or another. It was originally built for the use of Russian imperial officers in the 1910s. During the Civil War, the building was occupied by the Finnish Red Guard for a few months in the winter of 1918, but towards the end of the year it was presided over by officers of the German Empire. Since 1919 Katajanokan Kasino has been in the use of Finnish officers, and the national defence organisations have held functions there.
Facilities in the building include the Marski, Korsu, Sailori and Jääkäri private rooms. The renovations made to Katajanokan Kasino, under the supervision of the National Board of Antiquities, have captured the traditional military officer ambience. Today, there is a public restaurant in the building, and its facilities are rented out for conferences and parties.
