Eduardo Chillida was born in San Sebastian in the Spanish Basque country. He studied architecture in Madrid from 1942-1947, after which he moved to Paris to study art.

Chillida says that his works are governed by a set of essential laws which stipulate his creative freedom even before an actual form begins to emerge. To him, the harmony of different forms is much more important a goal than the forms themselves.

The monument is a symbol of the union of art and science, and was donated by the Finnish Cultural Foundation to commemorate the 350th anniversary of the University of Helsinki. The steel piece is 2.5 metres high, weighing 4400 kilos.
