Since childhood, the proximity and an inifinity to the forest and nature has been an important part of Outi Leinonen’s life. Her father was a forester and her family summers were spent in the Finnish forest’s environment. This preoccupation with the nature is reflected in Outi Leinonen’s artistic production. Already in the 1970s she created her first exhibition of works, not only works of her father’s hat and tie, but also of pine cones and seeds.

The work titled Lentoon (which can be translated as ”to take flight/be air borne”) is a relief-like work made from ceramic seeds on the exterior of the school building. Thw orks consists of two groups, one of which has 4 seeds and the other 15. The same seed theme continues on the interior walls of the entrance steps.

Outi Leinonen’s idea for the work is that the school is symbolic of a large pine cone in the forest. Every year the school releases its pupils, the one-winged seeds, to take flight and to find their own way and place in the world.

The work located at the Käpylä Swedish speaking primary school was commissioned with the Percent for Art funds budgeted for artworks in new buildings and City developments.
