Kari Cavén designed Primary Colours as a temporary work for the Töölö Bay Art Garden. In the 2000s, the area has hosted many events for which contemporary artworks were acquired. Some of the originally temporary works are still there, Cavén's among them. The work does not belong to the collections of the Helsinki Art Museum.
In his characteristic way, Cavén has made Primary Colours by inventively recycling materials. The blue, yellow and red spheres were originally used as props in the 1990s television show Gladiators. In Cavén's work, the spheres are mounted on a disused electricity pylon. The tall installation stands harmoniously on its level site, its steel structures almost merging into the structures of the adjacent railway station. Sphere and pylon are both motifs used by Cavén in his earlier works.
