Antero Toikka’s temporary public art work Sigma (the 18th letter of the Greek alphabet) was placed in the Aurora field, behind the famous Alvar Aalto Finlandia House. The sharply-formed sculpture is made of three black painted steel triangles which join at the centre. The work’s form was inspired by variations of the sigma sign.
The work’s name Sigma has many references in particular in sciences but it is commonly used to signify the “sum” of parts. The name also refers to the work’s colour which is black, the sum of all colours.
Toikka has made many temporary public art works, which have been placed in Helsinki and in other parts of Finland. The works move from one place to the next taking on a new life and expressiving new gestures in each new place or surroundings they occupy. The temporary work not only changes its own character in reposnse to each new environment but also transforms the local urban environs as it inhabits new realms.
Sigma was previously on view along Paavo Nurmi Street between the Opera House and the Töölö Sports Hall, in Kaivopuisto park area and in the area of Mustikkamaa.
