Aukusti Veuro was born in Sääksjärvi where he also studied sculpture under Emil Wikström. Veuro was also a founder; he received a Grand Prix at the Paris World Fair for the work he did on Wäinö Aaltonen's, his brother-in-law's, Paavo Nurmi statue. Veuro's entry Thinking won the renewed competition for the Aleksis Kivi memorial in 1930, with Wäinö Aaltonen finishing second. The jury, however, decided to commission the memorial from Aaltonen. Veuro's Kivi memorial was unveiled in Nurmijärvi, where Kivi was born, in 1934. In addition to the Welder, it is one of his principal pieces. The Welder was unveiled in front of the main gate of the company Heteka Oy in 1948. Heteka Oy, founded in 1932, was one the largest metalworks in Helsinki, manufacturing metal furniture and beds.
