During the massive air strikes on Helsinki in February 1944, a total of 2,120 sorties were made over the city and some 20,000 bombs were dropped. Thanks to Helsinki's defender, the First air defence regiment, and its concerted effort only 800 bombs hit the city. D uring October 6, 1939-March 22, 1940, a heavy antiaircraft unit operated on the Myllykallio hill in Lauttasaari. The unit comprised two 76 mm guns. During June 17, 1941-July 29, 1944 the heavy antiaircraft unit 4 operated on the same hill. It included six 76- itk-31-type guns, one of which was returned to Myllykallio in memory of Lauttasaari's defence on June 12, 1980. There is also another air defence memorial in Lauttasaari, in the Veijarivuorenniemi park.
