sculpture Kuokkamies / Man with a hoe

The work is also known as `Children's future' and it was originally located by the Lastenlinna children's hospital. The sculpture depicts a spent old man working the soil with his hoe; such strong images of work and people were typical of Erik Wikström, most famous of the artists to depict Finnish realism. His subjects are often closely connected to the characters of Kalevala to which his picturesque folk types lent their features. The old man in the sculpture toils to give his children a better future. He has stopped for a moment and is looking up, perhaps thinking about the importance of his work to the coming generations. The sculpture is cast in bronze.
