The title of the exhibition In all quietness was borrowed from a video piece by Jyri Heikkilä (2002). Heikkilä’s work deals with the fundamental issues of art-making and was made in all quietness, away from the eyes of the artworld and the media. The exhibition, which will take place in the first-floor galleries of Art Museum Tennis Palace, will present works by a group of uncompromising artists, including Heli Vehkaperä whose works question and evolve the idea of what it is to be a painter.

The exhibition is about quietness and the ability to stop and linger. It includes Alice Kaira self-portraits of her ageing, fragile self, while in Mikko Kuorinki’s works we encounter withdrawn youth, and loneliness and solace in Johanna Ropponen’s photographic works. Maarit Nevanperä has made observations of people around her, of small, fleeting moments; what does it really mean to care about someone?

Denise Ziegler has explored the world around her from a fresh perspective by interpreting visually the rich world of sound. Henri Tani has submerged himself in the World Wide Web, while Helena Öst’s two videos deal with how we like to humanise dogs, our best friends. Antti Laitinen’s conceptual ready-made explores the meaning of transforming something into art; what is the purpose of going through the trouble and working so hard?

The art shown in In all quietness makes no attempt to awe the viewer or dazzle with gaudy effects. It is simple in form but emphatic, poignant and compassionate in content. The works on display will include drawings, videos, photographs, textile works and installations from ten artists.

The exhibition is the fourth in a series introducing the latest acquisitions of the Helsinki City Art Museum. It also includes borrowed works.
